What You’ll Learn in Our Piano Lessons

Hand Position

Proper hand position is essential for confident piano playing. Fingers should remain gently curved, with a natural “C” shape between the thumb and index finger. The wrist should stay level, fingers aligned with the keys, and each finger centered on the notes for better accuracy. Good posture is also important — students should sit upright with the bench high enough to keep elbows level with the keyboard, shoulders relaxed, and arms flexible.

Scales

Scales are an important part of piano training because they help students develop legato playing and evenness. Legato means smoothly connecting notes so each key is pressed as the previous one is released, creating continuous sound without gaps. Evenness refers to consistent volume and rhythm, which can be challenging for beginners, especially when using the thumb. Practicing scales with a metronome helps students build steady timing, control, and overall coordination.

Sight Reading

Sight reading is an essential skill for developing musicians. Students begin by learning treble and bass clefs and how to identify notes on lines and spaces, often using simple memory tools that gradually fade as recognition becomes automatic. Sight reading also includes rhythm training, where students learn how note values and symbols represent different speeds and timing. As students advance, practice focuses on improving speed, accuracy, and the ability to read ahead, helping build stronger overall musicianship.

Music Theory

Music theory helps students recognize and understand the patterns found throughout music. Through a combination of ear training and written exercises, students learn to identify melodies, harmonies, and musical structure. Harmony is created by chords — groups of three or more notes played together — and can be major, minor, diminished, and more, each producing a different emotional effect. Beginner theory often starts with learning to recognize basic chord types, while advanced students develop the ability to analyze music, write what they hear, and understand deeper musical structure over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Choose Piano Lessons in Tarzana

The piano is one of the best instruments to start with because of its visual layout and ability to produce sound immediately, without the long setup time required by many other instruments. This makes it an ideal choice for young children and first-time students, which is why piano remains one of the most popular instruments worldwide. Piano also provides one of the strongest foundations for understanding music theory and structure, since students can play multiple notes at once and clearly see how music is built. While the piano is relatively easy to begin, it offers lifelong challenges and remains one of the most rewarding instruments to master.

When Should My Child Start Piano Lessons?

Most children are ready to begin piano lessons around age four, though readiness can vary from child to child. Learning music requires focus and attention, and each child develops these skills at a different pace. The best way to determine readiness is often to enroll and see how the child responds to lessons. Parental support and light guidance with practice can make a significant difference, and attending our recitals or masterclasses often sparks curiosity and motivation to begin learning the piano.

How Quickly Can You Learn to Play Piano?

Many students are able to learn simple pieces within a few months, especially with regular practice. However, everyone progresses at a different pace, making this question difficult to answer exactly. As skills develop, improvement often accelerates over time. Most of our students continue long term because they enjoy learning, building confidence, and seeing steady progress.

Can You Learn Piano at Any Age?

It is never too late to learn piano. This is a common question from adults who are returning to the instrument after many years or starting for the first time. We believe piano can be learned at any age, and in many cases adults progress quickly because they can better understand concepts such as technique, music theory, and reading.
